Safety Guidelines
For the safety of our young entrepreneurs, we require that a parent or legal guardian, register their child on this website.
Finding work can be an exciting opportunity for teens to gain experience, learn responsibility, and earn extra money. However, ensuring their safety is paramount. Parents, guardians and teens must work together to ensure a potential job is safe and before taking any job should search here at the National Offender Registry.
Here are some other essential safety guidelines for teens looking for work, along with what parents/guardians should know to keep their child safe:
1- Teens should prioritize finding jobs through reputable sources, such as well-known local businesses, family connections, or established online platforms. It’s important to avoid job offers that seem too good to be true or come from unfamiliar sources, as these could be potential scams or unsafe environments.
2- Both teens and their parents should carefully research any potential employer. This includes checking reviews online, asking for references, and visiting the workplace if possible. Understanding the work environment and the people they will be working with can help teens and parents gauge the safety and suitability of the job.
3- Teens should be aware of their rights as employees. This includes knowing the minimum wage laws, understanding working hours limitations for their age group, and being informed about workplace safety regulations. Parents can help by discussing these rights with their teens and encouraging them to speak up if they feel uncomfortable or if their rights are being violated.
4- Transportation safety is crucial. Parents should discuss and plan how their teen will travel to and from work. This might involve arranging rides with trusted adults, using public transportation safely, or considering alternative transportation options like biking or walking in safe areas.
Lastly, communication between parents and teens is key. Parents should maintain an open dialogue with their teen about their job experience. Encourage teens to share any concerns or incidents that occur at work, and assure them that they can come to you for help or advice if needed. Being supportive and informed allows parents to help their teen navigate the challenges of summer work while prioritizing their safety and well-being.
